Sapi Bali (Bali Cattle)
Bali Island to save cultural treasures and natural wonders attract. Various places have become tourist destinations from local and foreign tourists. However, this time I visited ones place rarely or never visited by tourists. The place for breeding Bali Cattle (sapi Bali) which is a Bali typical animal. Previously Balinese animals we already know is the Bali Starling bird.
Bali cattle are descendants of Bos sondaicus cow (Bos Banteng), which successfully defused and experiencing rapid development on the Bali island. Original Bali cattle have the same shape and characteristics of a bull. Bali cattle including oxen endowment (labor and cut).
Of the many advantages, the Cow Bali has few weaknesses, which can have a virus Jembrana. Flies are the media of Jembrana virus. Besides Bali Cattle are also susceptible to Malignant Catarrhal Fever, if adjacent to the sheep as a vector. Therefore, Balinese Cattle are not pure bred outside the island of Bali.
To go to the office and Breeding Cattle Development Project in Bali, we had to walk a mile past a cow pasture where Bali releases freely. The trail is still in the form of rocks that are not flat so it does not allow ordinary vehicles can pass through the street like that, except off-road vehicles. However, this is a unique journey, we can see a vast expanse of land that contains germplasm Bali Cattle.
Bali cattle have a cow that has many superior characteristics such as reproduction is very good, quick birth attendants, and easily adapt to their environment, resistant to disease, can live in a critical area, has a good digestibility of feed and a high percentage of carcasses. Not surprisingly, Bali Cattle are among the best type of beef cows in the world.
Entering a simple office complex, I found the agency that manages the full name of this place. Animal Husbandry Department owns it turned out that agency that manages this place under the auspices of the Provincial Government of Bali and the full location in the Village Pangyangan, District Pekutatan, Jembrana regency.
Between bulls with cows are quite striking differences, one is skin color. This is one of the uniqueness of Bali Cattle owned commercial rather than beef animals sold in markets.
Bali Cattle Characteristics include: hair color at the time of calf and reddish brown in color, while the cows do not change color and become black male adult, male body weight to 450 kg, while in cows 350 kg; horned; has a white spot on the buttocks (a semicircle); the lower lip edge and the inner ear and the fourth leg from Tarsus and carpus downward until the nail is white, and on the back edge there is a black line (Murtidjo, 1992)
Currently Bali Cattle were developed outside the island of Bali, among others, in Nusa Tenggara and Sumatra. In fact, according to the manager of this agency is there a rule that prohibits Bali cattle developed / bred outside Bali and vice versa, there are regulations that prohibit entering another cow to Bali to maintain the genetic purity of Bali cattle.
Some time ago, there was news in Malaysia existing commercial farms of Bali cattle, with farm management that is better than in Bali itself. Malaysia feared would claim germplasm Bali Cattle become theirs. It was surprising for us because some time ago, Malaysia has claimed that there is some art in Indonesia.
Malaysia has tried to claim the art of wayang kulit, Reog Ponorogo and changed the name to Dances Barongan, Lagu Rasa Sayange, Batik, and other art, which is the Indonesian culture. However, Indonesia immediately protested and finally acknowledges cultural Malaysia is from Indonesia.
But regrettably enough, why the Indonesian nation is currently paying less attention to cultural and biological diversity existing in his own country so easily are claimed by other countries. Just hope that the natural and cultural wealth in Indonesia immediately prior patented patent by other countries.
